NEW YORK — If fashion is all about the next big thing, the nine designers nominated for emerging talent awards by the Council of Fashion Designers of America might be the names to know.

Michelle Obama already does: Two of those nominated – Jason Wu and Thakoon Panichgul – seem to be favourites of the president’s wife.

“Middle America doesn’t know most of them at this point, but the fashion industry has seen the talent,” says CFDA executive director Steven Kolb.

Winners, to be announced at a ceremony Monday at Lincoln Center, receive financial support from Swarovski Crystal. Hopefully, Kolb says, the winners for womenswear, menswear and accessory design will also get name recognition, floor space in stores and editorial credits.

Last year’s winners – Kate and Laura Mulleavy of Rodarte – are now nominated as the top womenswear designers in the U.S. Previous winners include Anna Sui, Cynthia Rowley, Narciso Rodriguez, Proenza Schouler, Derek Lam and Rag & Bone.

Los Angeles – 06/08/09 /PRNewswire/ — High-end fashion and sportswear brand J.Lindeberg is announcing the consumer launch of the new “J.Lindeberg Art Polo / Camilo Villegas Collection” at the US Open. The US Open will be played at the Bethpage Black course in New York from June 18th-21st. The brand’s ambassador, Camilo Villegas, will be wearing the launch collection that will be available at an exclusive list of launch partners starting mid June.

J.Lindeberg recently re-signed leading PGA Tour player Camilo Villegas, and extended their already strong relationship, by collaboratively developing this new product offering of special edition collection pieces, promoted and worn by Villegas under the J.Lindeberg brand. The collection centers around innovative technical shirts, with unique art-work screen-printed on the garments. The result is something completely new and unique to the golf world, and reflects the J.Lindeberg tradition of combining performance and fashion in golf apparel.

The collection, which was successfully launched at the ’09 Orlando PGA Show in January, received strong reviews by both leading retailers and golf industry press, and was quickly sold out to the top accounts in the US, who will start selling the collection in mid June.

Chris Waddell, Director of Retail at the PGA National Resort And Spa, says “JL is an essential factor to the success of our professional Golf Shop. Their line provides a diversity and uniqueness not offered by any other vendor in the industry and we constantly replenish our inventory. They created an entire new category in golf apparel. When you think golf fashion, JL is the first company that comes to mind and we can’t wait to see the impact the new Camilo Villegas Collection will have.”

The Fall ’09 J.Lindeberg collections are available for wholesale in the New York and Los Angeles showrooms. Please contact Gary Sims, 213.745.2123, gsims@jlindebergusa.com.

Since its foundation in 1996 by creative director Johan Lindeberg, J. Lindeberg has successfully combined fashion and sportswear. In addition to J.Lindeberg flagship stores that can be found in New York, Stockholm, Copenhagen, Tokyo and Hong Kong, retailers carrying J. Lindeberg branded apparel include leading independent boutiques, upscale departments stores and some of the world’s most exclusive golf course pro shops. BERLIN (Reuters Life!) – Daniel Rodan, Berlin’s leather fashion designer to the stars, unveiled a new collection of Berlin Wall art-themed clothing on Tuesday as part of the 20th anniversary celebrations of the fall of the Cold War barrier.

The leather dresses and menswear feature art from the East Side Gallery, the 1,300 metre-long stretch of the Wall painted by 118 artists from 21 countries in 1990. Its graffiti art quickly came to symbolize the Wall itself.

One revealing mini-dress shows a famous image of the “Trabi”, the classic East German automobile, breaking through the concrete landmark that divided Berlin during the Cold War.

Rodan, whose clients include television and singing star David Hasselhoff and singer Tina Turner, said tackling a political subject was something new.

“Bringing together these three things: the political event, fashion design, and the art of the East Side Gallery, and then making sure the clothes fit on the celebrities — it was a real challenge,” Rodan told a news conference.

The leather outfits will be worn by prominent musicians and athletes at events during the coming months, then auctioned off for charity after the 20th anniversary celebrations on Nov. 9.

“It’s great that we can now have fun with things which previously were simply a catastrophe,” said the Berlin cabaret artist Chin Meyer at the presentation. “We have to be artistically creative with things we find painful.”

Other new designs presented by Rodan included barbed wire made of leather as a sexy fashion accessory.

Berlin’s year-long celebration of the fall of the Wall in 1989 will culminate with a ‘Festival of Freedom’ at the Brandenburg Gate and the toppling of 1,000 giant dominoes.

Local fashion designer Betty Tran launched her first Betty Sugar fashion collection with a parade at Skatt in Northbridge on Friday night.

The collection featured plenty of glamorous gowns in sparkle overload and cocktail-style dresses showed off by models including Kate Smeda.

The Curtin University fashion and textile student’s many models strutted a hot pink catwalk. Tran is now hoping to find stockists to sell her girlie and sexy designs.

Stylist Sylvia Giacci hosted the evening while film-writer Jimmy Jack and various models were spotted in the crowd.
